Meme - viral marketing



This video has been seen 28 million times. It was shared on all the major social networking websites. People shared it amongst themselves in emails, instant messages, and wall posts. They also did it the old fashion way, they told their friends and family.

In the Google Docs chat, one person admitted that the commercials were the reason they purchased the product.

Think about how important this is to marketers.

Since we are moving from a time when we were forced to watch advertisements between bits of television to today where we can watch the shows we want on demand, often skipping or without commercials. Instead of being forced to watch the commercials people are flocking to watch them.

Interestingly, this new method allows people to watch and comment on the product being marketed.

What would Shirky say about this?

  1. I believe Shirky would be very impressed with the number of views Old Spice received without truly marketing their product through television, radio, or billboards. They must have saved money do to the fact that they did not need to advertise there products as much. They took advantage of technology and used it to personally better themselves. In addittion to saving money, they can also see first hand how people feel about their product by reading the comments people may leave on the video. Since they have saved money on marketing they can now invest this new found money into either developing new products, or improving current ones, in an attempt to hopefully one day Monopolize the "smell goods" departement of life.

I think Shirky would think that this is a very effective method for marketing something because it allows old spice to save money and to get their product known through the people themselves spreading the word. I also think that he would say that this is a perfect example of how technology is allowing more people to socialize with each other and share new information with one another. A few years a ago some people would have never of thought of using you tube to promote products but now thanks to this video and old spice, it shows that it is possible and very efficient.

  3. I believe Shirky would be proud of the way that technology has developed in this day and age. Not because of how vast its resources are but because people are utlizing the different resources to market their product and comapny all while making more than they used for the airing of this new product.
