Don't worry. . .

Several folks emailed expressing surprise and dismay that they did not do better on the first quiz.

Do not despair!

We will review the quiz in class on Thursday, and we will go over the ideas behind each question.   We will also talk about how best to answer these types of question in general.

Consider Question 1:

1. Define the concept of the sociological imagination. Use an example where you explain a social outcome that demonstrates your understanding of the sociological imagination.

The most important part of this question is demonstrating your understanding of how to use the sociological imagination through *the way that you discuss your example*.

A question very similar to this one will be on the mid-term.  I would love it if everyone in the class would ace it, so lets use the comments on this post to improve our capacity to do this.

  1. Think about the name example that we started class with.   The social outcome was the drop in popularity of popular names.   How did we use our sociological imagination to come up with explanations for why we saw that drop?  We came up with a change in peoples preferences for distinctiveness,  an increase in the distribution of information through TV, magazines etc, lowered costs/risks related to being different, less centrality of Bible for coming up with names, etc.
  2. Now, think about what a social outcome is.  [notice the social outcome is at a level higher than the individual]
  3. Think of a social outcome that we have not discussed.  Something interesting that has really happened, and is likely caused by the combination of context, individual people and how they interact. (i.e. something we need to use our sociological imagination to understand).
  4. Use your sociological imagination to come up with possible explanation(s).
  5. Write up your new example and post it in the comments below.
  6. The best answers will get 3 to 5 extra credit points.
  7. Dont use your PID, but make sure we can tell who you are in your post so you can get credit;  a good thing to use would be your gmail address, or your last name and first initial, or use your university oak id (without the @ohio part)---- the one that goes like this hw3349560.

Don't worry!   Enjoy the snow.

  3. The sociological imagination is the link between incidents in the lives of individuals and larger social forces. A pretty good example is the difference in hair styles through the years. We look back at the eighties and simply laugh because they look "funny" or out of place. I believe these change because of the term looking glass self. It all starts with one bad look from someone to change the style, and once that person changes it spreads like wild fire since others start to have that reaction. Thats why people are constantly changing not only hair styles but others too. We all care about our image no matter if you admit it or not. When it's only one person no body cares but once a large group of people (like a society) it becomes a trend.

  4. The sociological imagination is the ability to link how people interact and their relationships to much larger social issues and outcomes. An example of this is the rise of teen pregnancy in the past decade. I think this is for several reasons. There are more and more shows emerging about teen pregnancy that make it seem manageable and even glorify it to an extent. Our society has also become much more accepting of pregnancy before marriage. In the past, people that became pregnant in their teens could be shunned by their friends and family, but these days, many families are shown supporting their teen through their pregnancy. By looking at how society has changed in their attitudes toward pregnancy and how media has influenced some of these attitudes, we can see why teen pregnancy may be on the rise, using our sociological imagination.

  5. The sociological imagination capacity to understand the correlation between the peoples social relationships and interactions with societal outcomes. For example, in recent generations in America and other western cultures the age at which people marry has been gradually increasing. There are many explanations for this. A longer life expectancy is among this as well as the availability of higher education. There are however more fascinating ties to social phenomena which can be attributed to this change. An increased societal emphasis on womens rights as well as sexual revolutions which affect both genders and a general trend away from traditional religious ideals in main stream culture as well. As with baby names one can understand a gradual change on the scale of millions when one attempts to understand and correlate the social inputs upon the population.

  6. Sociological imagination is the ability to see the relationship between individual biographies and historical change, along with the ability to connect basic and intimate aspects of life with seemingly impersonal historical forces. An example of this would be women's roles in society. Prior to the 1900's, women were not granted the fundemental rights given to men. For years women were viewed as inferior, and had the image of "homemaker." Compared to our society back then, things have changed durastically. Women are now able to vote, have high paying jobs, and even run for president. Feminist groups fighting for their rights got them to where they are now, which has given them their place in society.

  7. Sociological imagination is being able to recognize the connection between the choices of individuals with the bigger picture, the societal change. An example of this would be the increasing rate at which people are beginning to have more and more sexual partners. In the past it used to be a strict custom to be married before being sexually active with your partner. However, nowadays, among our peers it is not valued nearly as much. Due to the lyrics in nearly all music, especially rap, focusing on the sexual aspect of relationships as well as T.V. shows continously glamorizing the life of multiple partners in a short time without consequence (ie: Gossip Girl, Grey's Anatomy, etc.). We see and hear these examples from the celebrities that we tend to idolize and before we know it, we're living our lives in a similar fashion. So using our sociological imagination, I'm sure our society can see why this is becoming a common occurance.

  9. Sociological Imagination is the ability to look beyong one's own life and see how it is affected by the local, national, and global issues surrounding them. An example of this would be someone living in Maine who isn't affected by the oil spills and explosions in the southern united states. They aren't affected directly by the explosions but that oil is used for things that the people of Maine use everyday. They aren't concerned for those people that live on the coast where the oil washed up because it isn't hurting them none. People now-a-days have become so selfish and have forgotten the affects of everything around them on their everyday lives. If the people of Maine use their sociological imagination they would be aware of the problem and most would possibly want to help out.

  10. The sociological imagination is the ability to understand the parallels between larger issues and smaller societal relationships. For instance, the newly discovered phenom hip-hop trend of tight jeans and V-neck shirts. There was a time when wearing this sort of attire would make a male "gay" or a "fag". But now there are several hip-hop groups (such as the new boyz) that advertise this look through their physical image, and even in some of the lyrics of their songs! Why is it stylish? Why now? My guess is that it is as a result of the elimination of the concept of minorities. Blacks, Women, and Homosexuals are three of history's greatest minorities. Through time, as we have already seen, women and blacks have been liberated with the gaining of rights and other credibilities. I believe that gays are the next big group to be liberated. Their level of acceptance has skyrocketed in recent times. Seeing as how it was completely unacceptable to be homosexual some number of years ago. Now it is viewed as a positive, promoting diversity. There are even scholarships available to gays! All in all, I think the liberation of gays has clearly begun, and it shows through current popular styles.

  11. Accordingly, sociological imagination is the ability to see the length in the lives of individuals in large social forces such as social context, people, social action, and structure. A great example of this would be to look at family behaviors in the past 50 or so years. To be more specific, I'll talk about the concept of the "family dinner". Starting with my grandpa, I could tell you numerous stories about how he had to be home from "playing outside with friends" everyday and washed up for his mother's home cooked dinner by no later then 6pm. If he was late, or never showed up, my grandfather would be beaten with by his father with a belt and was not allowed to come back downstairs for snack. Despite my grandfather, I would also hear stories from my father too about his family dinners. Some things were the same, he still had to be home for dinner, yet instead of everyday at 6 like my grandfather had, it was only monday through thursday. Also, his mother wouldn't make dinner everyday, sometimes she would order or just put in a frozen pizza. As you can see, family dinners were definitely begging to have different meanings. With all of the activities, work, media, and so forth our society began to be involve with, time for family dinners decreased greatly. Now, taking a look at my current life, I would say our family dinners are rare. Usually, it is make your own dinner whenever you want or mom will heat something up for us and throw it in the fridge. Indeed, you can see over the last 50 years just by taking a look at my grandpas, fathers, and mine that families dinners have evolved from being a very important thing daily, to several times a week, to almost no importance at all within just 50 years of time.

Personally, I wouldn't mind the sit at home dinners every night, but thats coming from a college kid who eats microwaved food daily.

  12. Sociological Imagination is the ability to see how large outside forces affect the way that individuals act in a society. An example of Sociological Imagination producing a Sociological Outcome is the change in the way that people dress. Our grandparents, and to some degree our parents generations tend to dress much more formally and much more proper then kids in our generation do. I believe this is because our Society is becoming more and more liberal. In my Grandfathers days he would go to school in Slacks and a button down shirt neatly tucked into his pants. Now when you look through a class room with kids from our generation you will see a variety of different outfits and hardly anyone with their shirt tucked in. I think the large factor is that we are beginning to be more individualistic and liberal. For the first time in our country we elected a black president, and marijuana is decriminalized in certain states; two things that would’ve never happened in the 1940s or 1950s. As a whole I would say our country is becoming more liberal towards the social aspects of society. Due to Society as a whole becoming more understanding of the different ways people do things people are dressing differently and not as proper.

  13. The sociological imagination is characterized by having the aptitude to recognize how social issues, on a higher level, influence individuals to do or act certain ways within society. Overtime the push towards globalization in terms of international relations and peace has effected the opinions and attitudes people have towards war, peace, and structure of governments. People today are more open to creating peace on the international level and have seemed to desire more and more political and philosophical relationships abroad. In the past, the U.S. may not have been "isolationist" necessarily, but a stronger sense of nationalism was present in the U.S. therefore people were more concerned with what was happening within their own country. I think technology, secular government, money issues (national debt and resources) have all effected this shift into globalized thinking. This is a great example of recognizing how social forces have effected a shift in thinking and sociological imagination over time.

  14. The sociological imagination is the way that we are able to determine what causes outcomes. Note: A social outcome is an effect that affects an entire group of people. For example, there are people in Africa who are starving and become ill very easily or early in life. By using sociological imagination, one could assume that starving and ill people in Africa could be caused because they don’t have the money to pay for food or medicine. Another explanation is that they don’t have the resources available to them to go to the grocery store and get different types of food. Africans could also get sick because they are malnourished. Based on the lack of resources, there are many explanations for why Africans are starving and ill.

  15. The sociological imagination describes the ability to see the link between incidents in the lives of individuals and large social forces. Which means when people decide to make decisions throughout their life, they make them at free will but there are social factors that shape the decision they will make. For example, when you decide to get a job there are many variables that shape the job you get. Those factors can include: salary, level of education, bills, connections with other people, raising a family, etc.

  16. The sociological imagination is the ability to link how people interact and their relationships to much larger social issues and outcome. An example of this is as to why the number of children born with disabilities like autism and down syndrome are increasing each year. using sociological imagination we could assume there are many things in the world that are causing these babies to have these disabilities. Woman are spending most of their younger years trying to develop a career, mothers 35+ have a 1 in 350 chance of their babies having down syndrome. 45+ it is 1 in 30 chances. Another possibility could be woman having children close together in age. It take 1 to 3 years for woman to gain their vital nutrients back, having children close together in age increases the chance of having a handicap. one other possibility never considered is the male, just like woman after a male hits 35 his chances of helping produce a baby with a handicap increases. There are many assumption as to why more and more babies are born with disabilities but yet there is no cure.

  17. The sociological imagination is the ability to realize and understand how a social outcome emerged from the social context, actions, structure, and people involved. An example of this would be the kidnapping of young boys in china. One can arrive at this horrible social outcome by taking a step back and using the sociological imagination. The social context in this case is very important. China is a very densely populated country, which led to the government taking social action by creating legislation preventing families from having more than two children. Therefore, if a family desired a male heir to their family name they only get two tries. The structure of this system does not suit the desires of many citizens to have a son. Therefore the demand for a son is so great that people are actually driven to traffic children for a potential profit. Also due to the vast amount of people and kidnappings the structure of the law enforcement agencies in the area is not endowed well enough to track all the reported cases. This in turn leads to more and more kidnappings and finally arriving at the social outcome as it is today.

  18. Sociological Imagination is the understanding how individuals “the small picture” connect with, react to, and fit into society “the big picture.” An example of this would be the current recession that the country is going through. Americans are switching from their gas guzzling SUV’s and Pickup trucks for more economical cars and smaller SUV’s. Where it used to be “cool” in America to drive a H3 Hummer now that same person thinks its “cool” to be green and drive a Prius. These individuals reacted to their society by finding a way to not be as affected by the recession.

  19. Sociological imagination is a point of view that highlights how society affects the experiences we have and the choices we make. Take for example a person with really intense road rage. Imagine you are driving along a busy street going the speed limit, nothing faster, nothing slower. A fellow driver speeds around you and passes you giving you the finger and yelling profane comments through his or her window. You could first assume that this person was simply having a really bad day and on edge or this is just a negative and angry person in general. However, you can go further and use your sociological imagination to come to a better understanding. Roads have been modified to be smoother for an easier and faster drive, shortcuts and detours have been created to get you faster to where you need/want to be, speed limits have been changed to make it easier on us... Do we take these new advantages for granite? These "road ragers" just might. We live in a world where patience is decreasing while competitiveness is increasing. It is always a competition to be the quickest and the best. We see this on TV and in magazines and all over the world that nice guys do not finish first and the person who is the most competitive and fastest always wins. We have set times we need to arrive at destinations (for example a movie theater time) and we have such new advances in technology and machinery that it makes it nearly impossible to have an excuse as to why we are late or why we can not attend. Also along with these new advances and influences in the media it takes most of the human race longer to prepare to leave their homes and get headed to their destination. We try to get the "right" look and look the "best". We are finding new ways to find short cuts and cheat the systems. Following the rules is no longer a given. There are ways around the rules and this is becoming normal in societies' eyes, while following the rules is no longer. Driver number one was following the law and driving the speed limit. He or she is not doing anything wrong. However, driver number two obviously thinks that he or she is doing something wrong in their rage to speed around them. If all of these changes in our society were not occurring and decreasing our patience while increasing our competitiveness and desire to be the best, would road rage be as dominant? I think not.

  20. The sociological imagination is the ability to link individual social experiences to large-scale social outcomes. One major example of this concept producing a social outcome is the notion of online dating. In our grandparents' and parents' generations, the internet had not yet been made available to society, thus making them form relationships by talking, going out, and interacting face-to-face. Now that the majority of society has access to the internet, many people find it difficult to find a partner the "old-fashioned" way and resort to meeting others through internet chat blogs and web pages. I believe this transformation is due mainly in part to the discovery of the internet and the social gains it brought to our society.

  21. Sociological Imagination is the ability to correlate personal problems or issues to much larger outcomes or forces in society. An example of this is how one may relate the American media's vigorously enforced perception of "beauty" to eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia.

  22. Sociological imagination is the ability to recognize and grasp the concept of large scale social forces and how it is related to every single being and how they act. It involves both the historical outcome and future change. A way that social imagination has changed in our society is the concept of domestic violence. Back in time if a man hit a woman, he was shunned upon, and it was no were as near prevalent as it is now. All the media, such as television, phones, magazines, and radio, play a big factor in social imagination because they make it seem to the public that it is almost okay for domestic violence, and don't punish people. The probability of more domestic violence in the upcoming years is very predictable.

  23. Sociological imagination is the ability to be able to look beyond his/her own everyday life as a main factor to daily positive outcomes as well as negative outcomes and view the entire society in which they live in as the potential cause for these things. A good example of a social outcome is when we watch movies. We connect with characters and situations that remind us of our own lives and we project ourselves onto them causing us to somewhat live vicariously trough them, making an indifferent situtaion a personal one.

  24. Sociological imagination is the ability for someone to look beyond what they consciously do in everyday life, and see the things around them that inadvertently cause them to act in the manor that they do. To see the things that influence our everyday actions and outcomes, whether they be positive or negative. A large aspect of our lives that i feel influences us is sports and how connected some people can feel to a city, team, or even single athlete. Some people's entire days change in some cases just because it is game day or because someone is competing. Based on the outcomes of these events their days can change even more, getting happy and having a good day if your team wins or a bad one if you lose. People live through these athletes and feel as if their screaming at the TV and moaning over a loss will effect the multi millionaires. Agreeing with juan, we choose to live through them making an indifferent situation a personal one.

  25. Sociological imagination is the inter-relationship between large-scale social outcomes dictated through the actions of individuals.

Now I will say I take no credit for this example as I read it in the book "The Tipping Point" by Malcolm Gladwell but I think it clear exemplifies the idea of sociological imagination:

The New York City Police Department who looked to reduce the number of major crimes (Murder, rape, etc) in the city, started to focus their forces of targeting minor crimes such as vandalism and subway toll skippers. The idea was to set a tone for the area that crime would not go unpunished and make examples of those who acted in such a way, creating a stricter code to live by for younger generations who would in turn, not commit petty crimes which would lead to serious crimes.

  26. Social imagination suggests that people look at their own personal problems as social issues and in general try to connect their own individual experiences with the workings of society. An example of this is peoples use of cars. Today in society gas prices are starting to soar and are expected to reach over $4.00 a gallon. People in society once saw themselves buying cars based on their overall opinion of the car and not just the miles per gallon. With costs going up today we see people in society sacrificing safety, luxury, and carrying capacity for better miles to the gallon. It is the prices in gas that have driven us as a society to start using more fuel efficient cars and hybrids that not only help save us money but help the environment. As society continues to change we will see that peoples views of how and why they spend their money will also be reflected

  27. The sociological imagination is the ability to realize and understand how a social outcome can come from the social context, actions, structure, and people involved in the situation. An example of this can be shown through the casualization of the world; how our society has become "more loose" and less private. This all started mainly around the roaring twenties when things became "scandalous". There were cabaret clubs, revolution, womens rights, adultery, behind the scenes drinking (because of prohibition). Progressively throughout the years more and more has become more open. Back then it was unheard of for people to be making out while out in public, while slowly but surely public display of affection is a semi-normal thing to see now. In modern society we have emerged to this big open monster of random thoughts and less worries about displays of "has-been" discrepencies. On facebook, we literally speak or mind, or simply state what we are doing...example: "going to class but first off to the grab'n'go to get a sandwich and pepsi." Media has become so much looser also because back then Maryanns outfit on giligans island was considered outrageous but now we have full frontal nakeed scenes and sex on television. We are holding nothing back and it will be interesting to see how our children act in front of us!

  28. Sociological imagination is a way to think about the connection between large-scale social changes and individual choices. An example of this would be growing acceptance of profanity in public. Profanity has become very popular on cable television and on the radio. This has become more acceptable due to more networks like MTV, HBO, FX, Spike, and others like those using more and more profanity to widen popularity. It has been a gradual process from words like "suck" and "hell" to now words that are way worse. The growing advertisement of language like this has caused profanity to carry over to daily conversation from person to person without people even realizing that used to be taboo.

  29. Sociological imagination is the ability to discover the link between incidents in the lives of individuals and large social outcomes. An example of a social outcome we are currently seeing in society is an increase in divorce rates. Today, people tend to go against traditional values and instead of trying to keep their family together, they do what keeps them happy. People today are also more selfish and think more about their own happiness then the happiness of others (like their family). Another major reason for increasing divorce rates is our increasing reliance on convenience. We can access almost anything with the click of a button now-a-days and if a marriage hits a roadblock, couples tend to split rather than work things out because they are impatient. As the social behaviors of individual couples change because of the reasons above, the mass population has seen an increase in divorce rates.

  31. Sociological imagination is the process of linking one's individual experience with other social societies. An example of this would Obama becoming the first African American president. Fifty years ago this would not be acceptable. It would have caused an uproar in what was a racial society. Rosa Parks caused an uproar sitting on an all white bus in 1955. Obama was elected president without all the controversy there would have been back then. Society has changed tremendously into accepting african americans more than ever.

  32. To better understand the Sociological imagination, one must be able to link large sociological outcomes with their individual small-scale actions and doings. An example of the sociological imagination would be in the progression an athletes salary throughout the years. During the early years of sports, a professional athlete would not carry himself the way a professional athlete does today. A professional football player in the 1940’s would have to carry another job during the off-season to be able to pay for their needs. Today however, a professional athlete trains year round for his/her sport and makes millions of dollars. An athlete’s salary in the early and “progressive” years of sports is proportionally less than the salary of more common day free agents in sports. We as a society have also adapted to the new ways of the business of sports. We now view an athlete receiving millions of dollars as a normal salary for them. Society tends to look at the past salaries of professional athletes and view it as the “old days.” Sports as a whole have progressed, and so have their salaries.

  33. Sociological Imagination is the ability to relate personal problems or life issues to larger outcomes or instances in society. This definition is rather cloudy, but an example might help clarify. Okay, class, so for example, today, a typical woman puts way too much emphasis on beauty. There is so much emphasis that women seem to think that being a double zero and perfectly skinny is the golden standard. Well that's just stupid. Despite my regard for what is right and what is wrong, women will still find this bar-setting as THE bar setting. Women will still find it necessary to criticize their looks and appearance all because of what is considered "beautiful". The idea of what is truly beautiful is so warped at this point that it is affecting the standard women.

  34. Sociological Imaginiation is linking a personal idea and/or action to a worldwide situation. A perfect example of sociological imagination is the movie "pay it foward." In this movie a kid decides that if everyone in the world helped 7 people then the world could change for the better. The kids one idea to help 7 people, who will help 7 people, who will later help 7 more and so on, turned into world wide generosity. Clearly the boys idea, and the world acting on it is linkable which is why it is a perfect example of sociological imagination. I personally believe if this happened in real life the world would be a much better place. 7 people to help significally in one's lifetime is not many, and the world would be a happier place if we took the time to put other's before ourselves.

  35. The sociological imagination is the ability to recognize the relationship between large-scale social outcomes and society's individuals. Each on of the 6 billion+ individuals in the world play a part in large-scale (regional, national, or even international) outcomes and are also affected at an individual level by that world around them.

An example would be the rise in teen suicide in the past 25 years. Overall rates have dropped but for those between ages 15 and 24, the rates have tripled. The use of the sociological imagination allows us to pick apart such a strange happening. At first, the spike seems odd, but after looking at the individual level, one can see that the rise of technology and social interaction (via web, cell phones, iPads, etc.) has risen immensely and given much more opportunity for bullying as well as depression. Sure Facebook (and before that MySpace) have given a new venue to interact with friends, but many teens find themselves feeling more alone than ever. They can sit alone in their rooms and watch the world walk by at any instant by just turning on their computer.
This jump in social interaction is just one component of a technological network that hooks many in, but also leaves many out. Many a teen suicide has also been linked to cyber bulling and threats online. By examining the technological and social change in our culture, we can use the sociological imagination to link and relate causes and effects in order to explain the problem at an individual level as well as explain the strange national pattern.

  37. A definition of social imagination is the ability to understand and connect that some actions individuals in society do may lead to large or certain social outcomes. An example of a way social imagination was used to determine the cause of a social outcome is the rise of plastic surgery especially among women. It has risen an enormous 50% since 1992, and reached a total of 11 million cosmetic procedures in 2006 in the United States with breast augmentation being the most popular. Using social imagination some reasons why this rise has happened, the “perfect body” has been a recent desire for many because of television and magazines displaying gorgeous “perfect” models. Also, more and more people are going under the knife to look like their celebrity idol. Another reason might be how fast surgeries are becoming, you fall asleep and four hours later you wake up with size H breasts. Shows like “Extreme Makeover” and “Bridalplasty” can also be factors as to why more and more people are given a new nose instead of a new phone for birthdays.

  38. Sociological imagination is seeing the link between the actions of individuals and the large scale society. An example of this would be the new workout craze Zumba. It was actually started back in the early 90's but did not become popular until the past couple of years. It started with the inventor forgetting his usual fitness music and used a latin mix. The class he was teaching really enjoyed the new workout. The more and more people heard about the new fun workout, the more popular it became. It was all over YouTube and now Zumba is a staple class at gyms all across the world. A good question to ask would be why or how did this workout explode in popularity in the past few years when it has been around for a while? We can use our sociological imagination to guess that people started communicating through the internet and posting videos of how fun the workout really was.

  39. Sociological imagination the is capacity to see how social outcomes emerge from social context, people, social action, and structure.

An example would be the increase in the divorce rate in the US over the past 50 years. Could this be because more women can be financially independent, so the need to stay in a bad marriage for financial support is no longer needed? Is this because younger couples are now getting married sooner without thinking of the commitment of marriage enough? Could it be that more people are getting divorced when 20 years ago they wouldn't have because it was highly looked down upon by the Catholic church? Or could it be the fact that a couple can now get a divorce quicker so many couples rush into it when their problems may be able to be worked out?

  40. Sociological imagination is the ability to connect the most basic intimate aspects of an individual's life to seemingly impersonal and remote historical forces. It is also the understanding that the person is the result of society. An example of this could be that people assume a person is diagnosed with depression because something "bad" has happened in their life. This may not be the case, and it could be that society has become obsessed with the idea of mental illness and are beginning to diagnose more and more people with ADHD and depression. When most people hear that someone has depression, they usually assume that something "bad" has happened, when in all actuality they may not be depressed. They may just be feeling down.

  41. Sociological imagination is looking beyond every day trends an individual does and connecting them to a larger scale social trend. As time goes on we start different trends as a society therefor effecting each one of us as individuals. An example that can be used is society moving more towards a "green society". Society is coming down hard on being "green" that a lot of individuals start doing things in their lives that are eco-friendly like deer park new water bottles, or now turning to electric cars, or shopping bags that are reusable. We are starting to use more green approved products to continue the eco-friendly trend.

  42. Sociological Imagination is the ability to understand and recognize the connection between the actions of individuals and social forces on a much larger scale. Commonly, putting the sociological imagination to use requires thinking about social situations differently then you normally would in your day-to-day life. An example of this would be how patterns from the media and celebrities reflect on lifestyles of individuals in everyday society. Teenage girls who see beautiful, thin, and made up actresses on television or in magazines are driven to believe this is what’s normal, or, “cool”. This creates a standard that many individuals seem to follow, which causes many negative outcomes, such as eating disorders, drug problems, etc. The unrealistic lifestyle that celebrities lead drives individuals to base their lives off what they see in the media.

  44. The concept of the sociological imagination is the capacity to see how social outcomes emerge from the concept of social context, people, social action, and structure. It is a concept to describe the ability to see the link between incidents in the lives of individuals and large social forces. An example of the concept of sociological imagination is the fact that in the United States, divorce rates have increased dramatically. The reason for this change is the lack of communication and commitment, people tend to take the easy way out and walk away from the situation instead of finding a solution. As we discussed in class, another reason for divorce rates increasing dramatically is the fact that women are more independent and do not need men to help them survive and make money. Another example of the sociological imagination is the fact that there are so many teenagers that are pregnant and not married. I feel like this is caused by a lot of the reality t.v shows such as 16 and pregnant, teen mom, etc. It shows a lot of viewers that having a baby at such a young age is ok and can work out. A lot of the shows that teenagers watch, promote things that aren't necessarily right.

  45. Sociological imagination is the connection between a personal problem and society’s. The society's is on a much larger scale. It's the connection between what certain things have influenced the problem. An example of this would be the increase of childhood obesity in the past few years. There are several larger scale reasons to this. One reason could be that women's role as a "housewife" has changed, and they have started having careers. Thus having less time to make home cooked meals; therefore, they are buying food that is convenient rather than healthy. For example, fast food. Instead of making their children a healthy home cooked meal, they snag a few orders of French fries and hamburgers for dinner. Another explanation in the rise of childhood obesity is the rise of video games. Video games weren’t popular fifty years ago, but now children are developing addicting habits at such a young age. Fifteen years ago, we weren’t sitting around playing video games, we were outside playing tag. Society’s development in technology could be the reason.

The use of the social imagination enables us to notice how broad social changes are the causation of small individual instances. For example, there has been a decrease in student participation in classrooms over the past few years. I can use my social imagination to see what social changes may have made this occur. I believe that one cause could be our generations' dependence on technology. Our face-to-face communication has decreased immensely since we began to create our "cyber lives". Facebook is a great example of this; it connects many people in a way that requires no physical communion or communication. Texting is another example; we have lost the auditory component of communication. This could cause students to be less sure of themselves in a public setting; we would rather have a screen be our middle man in this communication process. Thus, less students are willing to participate in a social setting outside of the technological world.

  48. The concept of sociological imagination is to be able to see the connection between incidents in the lives of individuals and large social forces. There are many examples of this, but a good example is the rise in involvement during the last presidential election. President Barack Obama created an outburst of younger and more people voting. This was due to the fact that people wanted to be involved in making history. We started seeing his face on teeshirts and his name in songs. One man created an outburst of supporters and changes, while just one person voting for him helped create history in the making.

  49. The sociological imagination is our ability to distinguish the effects that social forces have on the lives of individuals, both internally and externally. We may consider how certain occurrences and circumstances are derived from an individual, as well as from society. If we consider the way plastic surgery has grown throughout history, we see a change in the lives and attitudes of individuals. In the early ages of our history, women were natural and full in their appearance; men preferred women with fuller and wider hips for child bearing. Today, we are faced with the media which portrays unrealistic images of males and females. Not only are eating disorders much more prevalent, but plastic surgeries have also become much more common. Why would such a dangerous procedure become so frequent? Not only is the spread of media to blame, but also the fact that we are constantly chasing a "perfect image", which is seemingly impossible to reach. Toys, like Barbie and Ken, provide little girls and boys with an image to to dream of looking extremely unrealistic. If Barbie were a real women, she would be around 7 feet tall, weigh about 100 lbs., and wear a size 4.. not possible. Instead of plastic surgery being used as a way to repair damage from accidents or birth defects (as it was prior to the spread of media), we are now chasing for something that is not readily attainable. We are taking many more risks and abusing a very dangerous and expensive medical procedure to look like technologically enhanced pictures and dolls. There is a constant and reoccurring idea of perfection that encompasses and drags us all down. The more we are exposed to such dramatic images, the more the growth of extremes, such as plastic surgery, will arise and reshape our society.

  50. The sociological imagination is the correlation or relationship between human interaction and society's social outcomes. It is through people that changes in cultures occur, whether it be from television or magazines, media has a great deal of effect on society. An example of this would be clothing, makeup, and appearance as a whole. Women are pressured today to "dress to impress" because that is how society imagines the ideal woman. In the 1950's, makeup was not emphasized and clothing was more conservative and bland. It is incredible how much fashion has changed throughout the years, and it is clearly evident that it is changing rapidly. Today, girls tend to wear a lot more makeup to cover every blemish and emphasize features on their face to look more appealing to men. Fashion has changed from long skirts to skimpy dresses and high heels. Hair has even changed, more people are coloring their hair different colors, even blue and pink, to "stand out and be different." It is easy to see people have stopped conforming to the normal trend and create their own styles. It will be interesting to see how fashion will change twenty years from now at the rate it's been going. Fashion will probably become more extreme and this is because of people's affect on society and the outcomes created from them.

  51. The concept of sociological imagination is to be able to see the connection between incidents in the lives of individuals and large social forces. There are many examples of social imagination. I can describe one idea of social imagination that might help others. Sex has been displaced throughout the recent years all over the media. Sex has been the main theme of songs, describing sexual actions. Tv shows and media has been displaying sex as well. Celebrities have been wearing revealing clothing to show off their sex appeal. All this started with one individual crossing the line of either singing about sex or actors portraying sex on tv. Over time, sex appeal has become more and more frequent. Now, we see a large portion of teenagers becoming pregnant. A show called "16 and Pregnant" and "Teen Mom" have become very dominant in the social world. Although there are many commercials and information about preventing pregnancies, teenagers are still becoming pregnant, and on purpose to! This has affect large social forces.

  52. 1.The definition of sociological imagination is ability to connect individual measures to greater social results. The ability to understand how life is affected by new large social forces including action, people, context in a larger picture. These changes occur in the social society and can be in a negative and positive way. It can always be different trends and patterns people are adapting to. Society and people expanding to how they act or what they do. It can be connecting personal problems with public issues. Apply this that is a problem to you. Then track it to the bigger society. A prime example can be the lack of long lasting marriages. The rate of divorce is raising to about 1 in every 2 marriages ends in divorce. Now in days it’s easier to get a divorce and a couple may not be treated wrong as they were in the olden days. Women don’t need to be with a man to stay stable anymore.

  53. The social imagination is the ability to see, imagine, wonder, and guess, how something in society works. Also it is the capacity to see and understand the link between people’s social relationships and their interactions with social outcomes. An example of this is eating disorders. Eating disorders have always been common in our society but I feel as though they are becoming more common and essentially becoming like a trend. Teens and even adults are seeing celebrities who are extremely thin and the average person feels like they should look just like them because they are famous. Not only is it evident in the gossip magazines but also it is evident in TV shows like Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars, shows that many teens look forward to seeing each week. We see and hear about these thin celebrities who some of us actually idolize and before we know it we are trying to be just as thin and “perfect” as them. Seeing the celebrities everyday makes us want to be like them which is like social imagination because its linking what we see everyday to our everyday lives.

  54. Sociological imagination is the capacity to see how individual actions lead to greater social changes. One example of this is the increasingly more developed world of communication. I can't tell you how many times my parents have said to me "When I was young, all we had was one telephone, no internet, cell phones or computers. If you wanted to talk to someone you pretty much had to walk to their house." In our brief history as a society the world of communication has developed from the Pony Express to mail via train to telephone and radio to email and now to texts and social networks. This dramatic shift has been caused by a need for individuals to communicate important information at increasingly quicker rates. So, in summary, the general public's need to communicate fast has slowly but surely caused extraordinary technological developments in the world of communication.

  55. The sociological imagination is the link between how people interact and the choices they make based on larger social issues. I think at this point in time, the economic recession really shows this concept of sociological imagination. Before the recession, my mom would take me shopping all the time, we would always go out to eat, etc. Once the recession hit and work decreased, we stopped going out as much and really watched our money spending. If I see this with my family, I can only imagine how much other families that got harshly hit by the recession must now watch their money spending.

  56. The sociological imagination is basically the way a larger group affects the actions or thoughts of an individual or smaller group. I believe a very good example of this is the growth in popularity of designer purchases. There are many reasons that I, personally, have been seeing them more and more often these days. The main reason that comes to my mind is the age I am at. I am 18 years old and, obviously, in college. When you’re younger there is not really the need for a “nice” purse but as you get older there seems to be more reasons to have them, whether it be to look “cool” or just to have a purse that is going to last you a long time. Girls who did not see a need to have them before may feel more of a need to have them once they see dozens of other girls walking around campus carry a Coach purse, for example. Another reason this seems to be an increasing trend is celebrities. We all see pictures of famous people online, in magazines, on TV, etc. and we can’t but kind of want what they have, which is usually something designer. Someone may see their favorite celebrity with a certain purse, love it, go out and buy it, show it to their friends, then their friends may end up loving it and then they go buy it and then the cycle just goes on basically forever. Someone must have caught on to this trend and when they realized how expensive these purses are (along with just anything designer) they created a very convenient website. On the site bagborroworsteal.com you can do exactly what it says, “borrow” a purse (or bracelet or whatever else almost) for a fairly low price and you can pay weekly or monthly. I think it is amazing the things people come up with when they realize the needs people have and how they can accommodate to those needs and appeal to such a large group of people.

  57. Sociological imagination refers to the ability to see the link between incidents in the lives of individuals and large social forces. Some concepts are social contexts, the people involved, what those people see, and how they do it. A good example of sociological imagination is how music has changed over the decades. It has helped shape our society that we know today. Music has effects our outcomes and we do not even realize it. It can effect who we hang out with, how we dress, and even our moods. If someone was listening to up-beat hip-hop music, we would get the impression that that person was in a good mood. Now, if a person was listening to a sad, slow country song, we might get the impression that that person is feeling sad. Throughout the years, music has changed very much. In the early 1920’s, jazz was all the rage. This was also the era where women started dressing showier. Jazz may have made women feel more independent than ever before. In the 1960’s and 70’s, people were listening to rock and roll bands. Some of these bands sang about drugs, peace, and war. The outcome of this was that people started using drugs and, hippies came about, and many other things, hence the era of rock and roll. In the 1980’s, bands had big hair, mullets, and wild, colorful clothing. This led people to dress crazier and bolder. As you can see, music has helped shape the history of our culture in many ways. From the roaring 20’s to the big-haired 80’s, music will always continue to evolve has time goes by.

  58. Sociological imaginations is the ability to connect lives and people to large social networks/groups/other people. An example of this would be the saying, "Keeping up with the Jones'." For years, people try to keep up with others. Since the age of technology, bigger houses, and faster cars, people try to get the best of the best. The problem with that is the creation of debt that has come from that. 46.2% of Americans are in credit card debt and it is suppose to increase. But because advertisements and television shows people all think they can "keep up with the Jones'" even when they do not have money.

  59. Sociological imagination is the ability to see the link between incidents in the lives of individuals and large social forces or groups.
One example of sociological imagination is the way that people dress. If you look back hundreds of years ago you would see people wearing clothing that you would never see today. For example people wore corsets, giant dresses, knickers, and flat caps. People tend to dress very conservative and plain compared to how they dress now for example Lady Gaga wears new things that no one has ever seen before on a daily basis. There are many reasons to why the style has changed over years. You can see a complete style change within decades even within years. One reason is that now people have more options as to what they can wear; you can go to a store, and have hundreds of options that are all completely different from each other. Another reason is that people want to stand out, and differentiate themselves and are being more creative. Because people try to stand out, they buy clothing that not many others have. Once people see that a person is wearing something they have never seen before, they go and buy it and the trend spreads very quickly. Another reason is that everything in our lives has changed and became more modern, for example new advancing technology, it would make sense that clothing would change along with everything else that is changing.

  60. Sociological Imagination: the capacity to discover how social outcomes emerge from social contexts, the people involved, what those people do, how they do it.

    Example:
Our society has a disturbing trend on its hands (or, I should say, on its hips and stomach): over the past 40 years, America's children have ballooned. In 1963, roughly 5% of children chowed down on a few too many fatty foods; by the mid '80s, that number had risen dramatically to about 15%. Now, 20 years later, 1 out of every 3 children is obese. What caused this widespread, life-threatening phenomenon?
There are a number of obvious, over-quoted possibilities such as TV and video games leading to a more sedentary lifestyle, and recess being cut out of school curricula at progressively earlier grades or altogether. However, we need to use our sociological imagination to look at this problem a little more deeply.

    1. Obesity used to be a rarity and was often equated with poor, uneducated individuals. Just think about it: around the turn of the century, honest-to-goodness obese individuals were so rare they were (cruelly) exhibited in circus sideshows. How times have changed! Obesity is no longer an anomaly; in fact, it would be more surprising it we didn't see obesity on a regular basis. Since it is no longer rare, there is a much lower societal cost associated with obesity—obese individuals aren’t the odd ones out anymore
    2. Obesity rates were relatively stagnant until the late '60s and early '70s. During this time, the women's liberation movement swept America, making it acceptable for women to take on activities other than cooking and cleaning. However, they were doing just that: NOT cooking for their families. Instead, box mixes, frozen dinners, and fast food found their way into American diets. Unfortunately for our waist lines, these foods are generally much higher in fat and sodium than meals prepared from scratch.
    3. America’s kids seek instant gratification. And no wonder, when we get everything quickly: high-speed internet, instant movies, real-time video Skype…the list goes on. Unfortunately, instant gratification negatively impacts waistlines. Our generation errs on the side of temporarily feeling good while eating a family-sized Doritos bag, then thinking about the stomach ache and the extra pound they gained the next day!

  61. Sociological imagination is the link between society and individuals.

An example of this would be mental ilness issues. The ridges "Athens Asylum for the insane" was opened in 1874 and was a place that people would send anyone that was looked at as weird, crazy, or even because they had weird thoughts and made the mistake of telling someone. If you had the misfortune to be sent to the Asylum because you were different you had a chance or being "treated". You could have been submerged in ice cold water, shocked, lobotomized, or even take a nice ice pick through the eye to the brain. Fortunately, today it is a little different. Even though it is no longer that severe to have mental issues, it is still very hard for people to come to terms and seek professional help. Society may not lock you up against your will right away anymore but people still worry about lossing friends, family, or even their job if people find out that they're different. Just because you have to take pills everyday to function morally does not mean your crazy. But unfortunately society may still appear to look at you as not quite up to par with the so called "mormal person".

  62. Sociological imagination describes the ability to see the link between incidents in the lives of individual and large social forces. An example of this is how meal time has changed throughout the past 3 decades. My mother and father's generations were different in the sense of dinner time with their families. Back then, dinner was an important time when families sat down and enjoyed a meal together. Everyday, around five or six o'clock, the mother, usually, would have dinner waiting for when the father, the money provider, came home. The children would come and sit as well, and the family would have quality time that we, today, do not share as often as we should. Today, so many activities and events occur that we are often left to fend for our own meals. We usually eat when we are hungry. Parents are running around dropping off their kids at sporting functions, and parents are involved in their childrens lives that it is often shown that sitting down as a family is not a high priority as it used to be.

  63. Social Imagination is a term used to describe the ability to see the link between incidents in the lives of individuals and large social forces. No matter how personal or private our actions are, they are still controlled by society’s forces, and are a part of a larger framework. In simpler words, social imagination is used to see why people make the choices they do. One major example of this is the pressure today for females to look thin and beautiful at all times. Around the Victorian Era, women were considered desirable when they were fair skinned, and big boned. These two factors showed that they were a part of upper class, due to the fact that they had a large amount to eat, and did not need to spend time doing labor outside. Today, that has changed greatly with the help of magazines, and impact of the fashion industry women should be petite, tan, and resemble a Barbie doll. This is not easy, and leads to many issues, including eating disorders, skin cancer, and risky surgeries. If this behavior is risky, then why do women feel the need to look and act this way? The answer is the pressure of society, and other women around them make them feel as if they need to look this way in order to fit in.

  64. The term sociological imagination could be described as the ability to see the link between incidents in the lives of individuals and large sociological forces. It is the idea that if humans see themselves as one piece in a large puzzle they will better understand how our interdependent society comes together to create social norms and make decisions.
For example, the trends of dating have significantly changed over the years. New technology has drastically changed the way both teens and adults carry relationships. The popularity of dating websites has increased immensely within the last ten years. Over 40% of adults use or have used the internet to meet men and woman. This can be both a good and bad thing. It allows people to find someone that has the same interests, values, and physical appearance one is looking for. However, it leaves room for men and woman to lie about themselves and some argue it hinders the intimacy. Teens have adopted a whole new form of dating within my own lifetime. During my parents time, it was expected of men to pick up a woman at her house, pay for her date, and introduce themselves to her parents. Today, you can observe a more flexible and relaxed way of dating. It is more common for girls to meet a boy for a date, split the check, and even wait until they are "officially dating" to introduce that person to family. Also, it is more popular to "talk" to someone before dating. The term "talking to someone" is referenced to the time where a boy and a girl hang out and get to know each other before "officially dating." This term and type of dating is relatively new. Many relationships prefer to text more than talk on the phone. Many might think this takes away from the intimacy and closeness of a relationship however, i believe in this new digital age it is constantly bringing communication to that person with the touch of your finger. Things like texting, Facebook, Twitter, etc. allow constant communication all day rather than a call in the morning and a call at night Whether this new form of dating is resulting in stronger relationships is hard to tell however, it is easy to see that this new age of dating has a tremendous impact on society and how we meet our significant others.

  65. sociological imagination is the ability to see an outcome in society, and find a reason to why that has happened. One example of this phenomena is that many people are filming and taking more pictures of things. An explanation to this is the rapid growth in popularity in social networking such as youtube and facebook

  66. The term “Social Imagination” is the ability to mentally connect the big social picture, or the societal change, with one’s own life. A good example of this would be beauty and women. In our society, there is an image that most women feel that they must try to be comparable to. Society has defined beauty to women. During our time, being skinny, having large breasts, and being tan is more or less what society tells us is beautiful. Being beautiful has morphed with the definition of “sexy”. Back in the early 1900’s, the definition of beautiful was much different. Women were preferred to have a light complexion and being classy was much more important than being raunchy. An example would be Audrey Hepburn versus Kim Kardashian.

Women in America mentally connect themselves to the big picture of what society says is beautiful. They do this by trying to look as close to that image as possible. Women get plastic surgery to remove fat, enhance their breast size, tighten wrinkles... more or less any sort of adjustment to your body that one could think of. Eating disorders are also much more common than they used to be. Women think they need to be skinny to be beautiful.

  67. The sociological imagination is the ability to see why social outcomes occur and what caused them. An example of this is text messaging on cell phones. I remember when I first got a cell phone I tried to figure out everything it could do by looking through all of the tools and settings. I discovered the texting option and back then it wasn’t as popular as it is now. I can imagine as more and more people discovered this other option of communication they decided to use it for several reasons. It is convenient to send messages to multiple people quickly, it is faster than making phone calls, and it has less confrontation than a phone call. People now would rather send a text of a confrontational discussion than on the phone or in person because they feel it is easier to do so. Texting has increased because people find it less confrontational and quicker to use than phone calls.

  68. Sociological imagination is the ability to connect individual lives to much larger social forces. My opinion of this concept is that it's a personal problem that is caused/linked to a public issue. An example would be that a couple years ago when people started buying expensive homes because other people they knew were buying big houses even though they could not afford it. They all wanted to have the really nice house, like they see on the t.v show, "MTV Cribs." Unfortunately the houses they were buying were way out of their price range and although the bank gave them the loan, they could not pay it back and people went into huge debts. This is one of the reasons that triggered the recession in the United States and I believe that it is partly due to sociological imagination.

  69. The sociological imagination involves understanding the link between large social outcomes and individual social actions and context. One example of this involves the growing continuance of education. For example, a high school diploma used to be all the qualification a person needed for a job. Then, a college degree became necessary. Now, most people need a master's or doctorate degree to obtain a high-paying job. This trend came about because people who had the highest education always made the most money. Therefore, more people wanted to make more money so more people continued their education. Another contributing factor is that a high school diploma and even some college degrees have become very ordinary and common. Therefore, while competing for jobs applicants are having a harder time setting themselves apart form one another so many people continue their education in the hopes of making themselves irreplaceable and indispensable. This illustrates the concept of the sociological imagination because it explains how individual actions and goals have led to a cross country movement of continued and higher education to meet job standards and requirements.

  71. About the sociological imagination,
I am from Qatar and when i came her i found that the art museums have outnumbered all the other museums. So I said okay let me figure out why these Americans love art museums so bad. So I went to an art museum in Tampa, Florida and I saw this really huge and complex painting. But everybody gives the painting a look and moves ahead. The picture was in a very big hall. So I sat there for 4 hours to write the number of the people passing by and looking at the painting. In that 4 hours there were about 140 people passed by and nobody wasted more than 5 seconds looking at the picture. There was only one guy starred at the picture for about 2 minutes and he left the whole museum after 4 minutes. Which made me hypnotize that people only goes to art museums to tell their friends and neighbors that they went to Florida and visits these art museums.

  72. I read a paper in my English class last quarter about a major increase in narcissism throughout the country. The paper held social networking sites responsible for the increase. People are constantly given attention online and gain confidence and happiness from receiving comments on their pages. People who are seen as outcasts can communicate with people more like them online and feel better about themselves by being "popular" online. I personally think the increase in narcissism could also be caused by self esteem campaigns from celebrities and the push for uniqueness. People enjoy being different more so now than they used to. An example of a self-esteem campaign pushing to make young women feel good in their own skin would be Dove's Campaign for Real Beauty. Both of these could be leading to the increase in narcissism.

  73. The sociological imagination is the ability to observe the link between incidents in the lives of individuals and large social forces. An example where this can be seen is the way the role of women has changed over the course of the past century. In the traditional sense, women were seen as “housewifes”; meaning that they would be responsible for staying at home and cooking meals, caring for the children and taking care of the needs of the father figure in the household. Now that times have become more progressive, and women have a more active role in the house. Oftentimes today women have the same, if not the larger income than the male in the household. They are no longer expected by society to just stay at home and clean up; but rather they are leaving the houses and working. This is a working example because it shows how relatively small incidents, such as women fighting for equality (meaning the protests and speeches given) added together enabled women to earn a more involved role in today’s society.

  74. Sociological imagination is the link between society and individuals. It is the ability to see why social outcomes occur and what caused them. An example of this is the increasing amount of homosexuals and bisexuals that are coming out of the closet. This is due to many factors that society as a whole has brought about. For example, the Bible use to be why so many people didn't express if they were gay or lesbian because it says that being with someone of the same gender is wrong. With the creation of new religions and Christianity kind of being thrown on the back burner, more people are accepting to this idea. Another possible reason for the increase that has occurred over the years is because of Hollywood. Movies and TV shows such as Brokeback Mountain, Boys Don't Cry, and Will and Grace have opened up a new can of worms if you will, and allowed people to see these gay communities in a totally new light. It is almost as if in making these films and shows it allowed the closeted gays to find the courage to tell the world that they are homosexuals and proud of it. This example demonstrates sociological imagination in that because society is accepting to the idea of, in this case, homosexuals more and more individuals found themselves coming out and telling the world their sexuality.

  75. Social Imagination is the ability to recognize the relationship between the actions of individuals to a large-scale force from society. One example of social imagination is when a person thinks they are fat. This is a personal problem of your image and you can think its because you eat too much junk food or don’t exercise enough but it can also be linked to society. In the U.S. the population is overweight, and in society in the eighteenth century it was the chubby women that were who was considered the beauty. As well as it can be reasons because today there can be more foods with lower nutrition and more servings. Also there are fast food places, which is more convenient. Less exercise is going around now too because cars can get you where to go, and all these factors could play into why you think your fat. Another example of social imagination could be to women working and men not having to be the sole breadwinners. In history women stayed at home and were the caretakers and men went to work and earned the income for the family. But now women work in the work field as well and men are not the only sole breadwinners.

  76. Social imagination is the capability to connect incidents in ones life and groups. One example of social imagination is how many more people are becoming gay. Over the years more and more people are feeling comfortable to open up to the fact that they are attracted to the opposite sex. About 60 years ago and prior to that people would never come out of the closet. Since more people have become public about their feelings it has lead to more and more people not being afraid to tell society about them.
Another example of social imagination is that America is having more of a problem with obesity. Compared to 20 years ago we have found more people that are obese. This is happening because of how many more fast food restaurants have been opening up along with the prices of the food being cheap. With the food being non-expensive people are able to get a quick meal for less then 3 dollars. This can be convenient when people are running last to class or work and did not have time to make themselves something. Another reason obesity is such a problem in American is because of all the substances we have in our food; it is unhealthy. Even when labels make the food look good there are details that you don’t always see. People need to be able to start caring more about their selves because if not life will be shorter. Just look at the contestants on Biggest Loser. How they are right now is very unhealthy, but they are doing something to try and fix their problem.

  77. Sociological Imagination is the ability to see or to predict how or why social outcomes occur, through the collaboration of groups, society, social action, and structure. Sociological Imagination allows us to predict or explain the cause of trends based on past trends as well as by creating a relationship between one person or a small group and the society at large. For example style is one thing that is forever changing. What was thought of as awesome in the 70's is outdated and would be seen as dorky is worn today. One using their sociological Imagination, could concoct a list as to why a shift in style may have occurred. In example: Magazines such as Vouge and Allure seem to govern what is seen as stylish, as these magazines change or seem to updated their looks so do their readers. The introduction of new materials spandex was not around when my mother was my age, therefore it would have been impossible to have worn leggings around campus. Also as the economy changes so does fashion is a struggling economy people are more apt to wear practical clothing, it was actually a struggling economy which made jeans a popular fashion staple. Lastly celebrities also play a large part in clothing trends, we constantly are at fault for mimicking the look of celebrities, they play a large part in dictating trends such as uggs were around years before they were popular, but as soon as all the celebrities were seen wearing them, sale skyrocketed, now it is almost impossible to walk anywhere with out seeing a pair of uggs.

  78. Take an individual and analyze their choices and life style. Instead of looking at that one individual, think of the big picture. Individuals create a whole unit. See how that whole is constantly being influenced by the actions of its individuals, and then you will understand sociological imagination. An example of this is any type of art. Specifically, architecture and interior design reflects the day and age of the people that are creating it. School buildings that were made 50 years ago look different than the “modern” school buildings they are building today. A teenager’s room in 2011 looks completely different than the room that my mom lived in when she was a teenager, because interior design and architecture have movements that are constantly changing just like the people who are creating those changes.

  79. Social imagination is the understanding or prediction of how society evolves. Taking into consideration all the factors contributed by groups, organizations, those that have superiority over others, and lastly those in the 'spotlight'. I've thought about many possible examples to help demonstrate this theory, and one that struck my mind is that of plastic surgery. If I were to ask every student in the class, how many of their grandparents have had any kind of cosmetic surgery, I'm sure the rates would be low, if any at all. For parents, the degree would be rather larger. And lastly, for themselves, or anyone around their own age that they know that has it, I bet this would have the greatest response. The idea of personal image hasn't necessarily changed over the years, but the levels people attain to has become drastic to achieve this so called image. Also, celebrities only add onto the stress of having the perfect body, or perfect style. They also make it seem as if it's completely ok to get plastic surgery; almost like it's no big deal at all. Before you'd wear makeup to achieve a certain look, now a days you get surgery, and in the future it will be something else!

  80. 1. Sociological imagination is the ability to shift between the events in the lives of individuals and large social forces. It gives us the ability to look at trends in the past and examine why they have changed and are the way they are now. An example that explains this theory is someone who thinks they are overweight when in actuality they are not. This is linked to our obsession that all the celebrities in our society are thin and beautiful and their portrayal of the perfect body and image. Most people are as beautiful as the people they see everyday on TV, billboards, and magazines but what they don’t see is all the makeup and stuff they use to make themselves look perfect. Most pictures these days are all photo shopped in order to achieve the most perfect women or man
