Conflict Theory

Today in class, we discussed conflict theory. We learned that there are three basic assumptions associated with conflict theory:

1.) society is composed of groups

2.) groups often have competing interests

3.) groups have different types and amounts of resources

We can draw a few implications from these assumptions:

First that competing interests lead to conflict among groups, and second that the groups with more resources are at an advantage.

  1. So this isn't really related to conflict theory, but for the test next week, are we allowed to have any materials with us in class? I may be thinking of another class, but I remember one teacher saying that we can have some sheets with any information we could fit on them for the test.

Thanks! and sorry if this isn't for this class :p

The above link is a perfect representation of how our technology enables our society to enforce change.

  6. and another question, I'm looking over my notes and I ran into the term "concurrency." In class I know that the example was beer pong (how it was said that the use of cups in the game would spread cold sores), but what exactly is concurrency?

  9. Another interesting topic that you could use for explaining the conflict theory is with the disputes between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. More in depth it was between the Catholics and the Protestants. I visited Ireland in January of my senior year and found this historical event very interesting but also scary. My school is a Catholic High School and we were even told not to wear any of our clothes that had Catholic written on it while we were in Belfast, even today! There are still problems going on in Northern Ireland between Catholics and Protestants.
