Social Change and Development

Today in class, we discussed social change and development.

We learned that social change is a change in the distribution of goods, resources, roles, ideas or relationships at a large scale and are often related to changes in institutions, rules, laws or infrastructure.

Development is a specific type of social change (generally a positive change), which includes the growth or creation of new and better systems of exchange and/or infrastructure. Development always for improvement in economic, social, or bodily well-being (sometimes unintentionally).

One example of development is the proliferation of affordable cell phones in Africa, which created several unintended improvements, such as improved economic opportunity and unobtrusive reminders to take medications.

  1. I think that social change is a vey good thing. I think that the affordable cell phones in africa is a very good idea and should be spread to other countries who also benefit from having cell phones. With everyone having cell phones, it would be easier to record events that happen day to day so if something major happened like some form of an attack, chances are it would be recorded.

  2. The distribution of goods throughout the world has such variety, and here in America we're so far advanced and more developed then other countries. An example of this is, for the super bowl, they had already printed shirts and hat for both teams being super bowl champions (steelers/packers) obviously there is only one winner, so what do you do with all of the losing team's merchandise? well, we distribute this to other countries and places that are in need. Because it's pointless today in our society today to be wearing a Pittsburg Steelers 2010-2011 super bowl champions shirt and hat. So we distribute these goods, at a very, very cheap rate, if not at no total cost at all, to less developed countries and places that are in need.

  4. I think that it is cool that people are getting cell phones and laptops all around the world now. It really does show the change in culture around the world and how far we've come technology wise. I remember when I got excited just to get a cell phone, now everyone wants the smart phones that are basically little computers. Seeing the phones that they are giving to third world countries definitely takes me back, and it is good to see everyone getting in on what is now definitely a globalized communicated world.
