Before you can turn in a great project, you have to make your project great! What counts as a great project? Here are the criteria that we use to evaluate the projects, so make sure that you are maximizing your performance on the most important aspects.
Make it Great!
- The assignment description says: "The instructional aspect is most important." Here is what that means for all type of projects in the course.
- Make sure that the connection to the course concepts is strong and clear.
- Demonstrate how those concepts help us understand the world better, are relevant, or are helpful in getting things done (like helping organize people to join your FB group, for instance).
- Ideally, people who watch or read your project will not just learn about ideas from sociology, but will actually experience some benefit from learning about them.
- For instance, if we know that the tragedy of the commons often arises in situations that lack 3rd party enforcement of rules, then students living in shared housing could establish rules and resources to make monitoring and sanctioning more effective.
- It is better go beyond simply illustrating a concept. Do something with it.
- Do no harm.
- Consider how your project will be perceived-- go out of your way to avoid causing harm.
- Sensitive topics (violence, etc.) may require a disclaimer so that audiences can opt out if they want to.
- Strive also to have a positive impact of some sort. For instance, if you address an important social problem, connect your project to organizations that address or try to solve that problem.
- The project should have intrinsic value. That means, that videos should be both informative and interesting to the degree that other people would chose to share them. Or, for blogs and FB groups, be the sort of group that people would honestly suggest to others to join.
- Take the time to edit and improve your initial version.
- The first iteration can surely be improved. Take the time to make it more effective.
- Remember that this project is public-- make something that you will be proud to associate with your name, on the internet, for a long, long time.
- Share your project with your TA before it is due.
- IF you have questions about how to improve your project-- share your work in progress with your TA and get helpful feedback.
How to turn it in:
- Make sure your project is "live" online. It takes a little while for videos uploaded to YouTube to become available. Blog posts and FB posts update pretty much instantly.
- Update your project google doc to make sure it has the following information:
- Group name
- Contact person's gmail address
- Link to project
- Title of project
- Brief explanation of project that makes it clear how you used the sociological concepts.
- Copy and paste items 1-5 into an email
- Address that email to your TA, and to the gmail address of everyone in your group.
- Send that email.
- Copy and paste items 1-5 into a comment on this blog post.
- Upload that comment.
- DO NOT post your group members contact details on the blog.
- No oak ids etc. Thanks!
- Leave that info on the google doc.
The deal with presenting:
- Ted, Zeke, Krystal, Rebecca and Jarrid are curating the projects for presentation.
- Projects that exceed our quality expectations and are in on time will be selected for presentation in class.
- Some projects may require editing and improvement before that can be shown in class.
- Don't despair-- just edit, improve and submit to present on a later day.
- Work with your TA on how to improve your project.
- We will announce projects to be presented for each day in a new blog post. (and email to the group leaders too).
- Extra credit will be given to projects that are selected for presentation.
- Cheers!

Video Title on Youtube: Corruption & Tragedy in College
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWcg6tUFQsM&feature=player_embedded
Our video shows the types of corruption and tragedy of the commons that can occur on a college campus. We have two scenes for corruption that an R.A. can possibly abuse his/or her privileges in that position such as having rights to use the master key and the ability to right people up. He takes money from the students so that he doesn’t write them up for drinking. Also for tragedy of the commons, students abuse the availability of notes to students in the class if they missed class or just to take notes on.
We chose these two topics because they happen more often then we think in life. They happen on a micro level and not just on a macro level but they are just harder to point out.

Symbols and Memes
We created this video to help people understand symbols and memes. We figured that the best way to understand them is to show pictures of them. The best way that we understood memes was seeing examples of them. We have the definitions of each and some random facts about each. We took everyday symbols and compile them together. On youtube, we found the most viewed videos to help explain our point.

Second, Ryan and Tom said with random students are dinner so we could judge the reactions on peoples faces and see how awkward it is for them. Next, Ryan drank out of bottles of Gatorade and opened a bag of chips in front on employees and no one confronted him. Don't worry we got them out and paid for them! Finally, Kyle buys a dollars worth of lollipops at CVS and pays in 100 hundred pennies. We were experimenting on how people react in certain situations and doing thing out of our society's norm.

Title: Take Me Home Tonight
Explanation: We used the sociological concepts to explore the dating world and how it has evolved over the years. We interviewed older people to portray what the norms were back then when you went out on a date. This showed how chivalry was a lot different back then. More guys were gentlemen, and women expected different things from men back then. It also shows how much the times have changed with using technology to communicate, and how much it has taken away from face to face contact and communication with a person. We then interviewed teens from our generation and we got much different results from them than we did from the earlier generations. We found that our generation truly relies on technology in a relationship, in contrast to the older generation of people who do not find different means technology necessary to keep a relationship healthy. Technology allows for a window of opportunity for people to communicate and meet other people, but many people believe that it has taken away the intimacy of face to face communication. Sociological imagination was used to show how the times have changed through out the years and how people’s actions have changed. These new actions have now become the norms of our society and it is what people follow now. We reflected pro-scriptive norms and pre-scriptive norms through certain things guys should do and shouldn’t do when dating a girl or trying to pursue a girl. Using these concepts we came to the conclusion that dating really has changed drastically over the years, but our generation really hasn’t experienced other wise because technology is now second nature to our generation.

We focused mainly on the dorm bathrooms, but also went a little further and covered a broader spectrum of college life. The main idea was that the bathrooms are there for everyone to use, a common good for all. But each person must be responsible for his or her own actions, and when they are not, the whole group (residents of the dorm) must suffer.

Final Video: Plus Size Models going against the norms of today’s society
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSz7qjdhiRY&feature=youtube_gdata
When we first started this project we were going to do the topic of how body images have changed throughout the different time era’s. But after looking for different things that could go along we saw that there was more information about how plus size models are trying to change the way that people look at models. Plus size models are not shown in the public eye at all, all you see are the skinny models. We all felt that if we showed how plus size models are going against the social norms by being different; then maybe people would see that we are able to change the norms of the world. Norms tell us how to live and they give us rules as to how we should live our lives, but plus size models are showing that we don’t always have to live by those certain norms; and we can still have a happy and healthy life.

Description:
Our project is an educational video illustrating the sociological concepts of differential association theory, control theory, roles, and social networks and how they are applied to the lives of two college students. Chandler plays the role of a good student by being responsible and getting his assignments done, while Adam plays the role of a bad student who is more focused on partying and less worried about his academic obligations. Adam’s peers influence his behavior in a negative way (differential association) and Chandler’s strong social bonds cause him to refrain from deviating (control theory). In essence, who we choose to associate ourselves with can have a potential influence on how we live our lives.

Project Link: www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxZ21MjKXFg
Description: Media affects society; media has always affected society. The video that was created shows how different events in the media has shaped society because media does, in fact, affect society. There are three main sections of the video which follow the specific songs that were chosen with specific photos to describe the topic. The first topic and cluster of pictures show the viewer that media can negatively affect society. Specific photos were placed strategically with specific lyrics of the song that was chosen, “Where Is the Love” by Black-Eyed Peas. The second part of the video shows the viewer that media can affect society in a positive aspect as well. Again, all the photos where placed in specific order which correlated to specific lyrics in the song “Can’t Hold Us Down” by Christina Aguilera. The last section of the video shows the different types of technology that has evolved throughout the years to help media spread easier to affect society. Throughout the video specific slides of sociological concepts were put in specific order in the video. The pictures before and after the slides of the sociological concepts help describe the concepts, along with some of the lyrics in the songs. Overall, the project video shows the media plays a huge role in shaping society!

Title of Project- “Whatchu talkin bout Willis” Knowyourmeme.com (check it out!)
Brief Description- In this facebook group we tried to create a sight where everyone would post all of their favorite memes, whether that be Internet sources or popular sayings that just caught around. Due to technical difficulties once again we would not put up a description for all of our members as to what this group was about, so people were a bit confused. What our own group found out that in creating this confusion, people began to talk to random strangers about their own personal confusion on the group and began to discuss this. In a way we managed to intertwine this back to sociology, which was not our initial intent, but still nevertheless, we were able to bring it back to the whole point of the project; that being create something relating to a sociology concept.

5. Explaination: We looked at the change in the view of tattoos in society. We asked people we knew on Facebook to put their opinions on tattoos through comments in the group. We found out that some people obviously had tattoos and supported them, while others thought they had no purpose and pointless. Tattoos are no longer a deviant act in society. Another term that was noticable throughout the comments was the concept of looking glass self, where people felt that others got tattoos to change the way people reacted to the people who got tattoos.

Brief explanation: We made a YouTube video about texting and phone etiquette. We used interviews and a skit to demonstrate sociological contexts. We tried to find out why people deviate from or comply with social norms of cell phone use. We also asked people about the types of memes they use while texting. Finally, we explored how our culture has involved because of cell phone technology and how social change and development link to cell phones. Enjoy! :)

4. Sittin' on tha Toilet vs. Egypt Protests
5. Sittin on tha toilet vs. Egyptian Protests- The idea that we used is comparing “sittin on tha toilet” video to the Protests in Egypt. With this we are comparing something important that is going on in our world today to a dumb YouTube video. With this we are going to use some terms we learned in class. We wanted to see if college students knew more about the youtube video than the Egyptian protests.

4. Sociology? Say Whaaa?
5. My group decided to do a blog for our final project. We have learned about many new & interesting sociological concepts this quarter that have been present in our everyday lives for years. We took our everyday interactions and events and related them back to a sociological idea from lecture. It was a great way for us to become aware of the everyday happenings around us and how those events can relate back to what we had just learned in class. It definitely helped us understand the concepts and make them more memorable in our mind by relating those concepts back to our personal lives.

4. Who will people help?
5. This project shows the difference between how girls are more likely to get help picking up their books than guys. We wanted to see if gender mattered when people are helping someone they do not know. Ostrom’s theory of why people help and share for free was the main sociological concept used in our video.

4. PROJECT NAME: THE SOCIAL NORMS: EMOTICONS
5. So we did our project on symbols, we wanted to keep it simple so we picked emoticons. We interviewed four people and asked them their first reactions to these emoticons :), :|, :\, XD, ;). We wanted to show that people have the same opinions on certain symbols and some don’t. When you send an emoticon you never know what the person receiving it will get what you meant by it because they could have a completely different view on that emoticon.
